How many years have you been providing labor support services?

I just started in  2010 but plan on doing this as my lifelong career!

How many births have you attended as of June 2010?

I have attended 1 birth so far.

Will you attend home labors/births as well as hospital labors/births?  Please explain your comfort level...

I welcome both hospital and home birth families. The home birth does need to be attended by a trained birth professional as well though.

What is the max number of births you feel comfortable handling each month?

Right now around 2 births per month.

Training & Credentials

What are your current credentials & individual experiences with doula care & labor support?

Currently, I am in training to become a doula with the ToLabor organization. I am also in training to become a childbirth educator with the ALACE/IBWP organization. I have attended and completed the Lamaze International Breastfeeding Support Specialists workshop.

Do you have any current plans for additional training?

Besides my official trainings: I am always finding new information, watching as many birth videos as I can get my hands on, and reading, reading, reading!

Do you provide breastfeeding support & what is your basic theory of breastfeeding?

I do provide breastfeeding support and I find it to be very important support to have. Good support throughout your breastfeeding relationship is very necessary. It is so easy to get discouraged, so it is important to have other woman who have been there or are going through these same things with you.

Do you typically provide postpartum support to your clients?

Yes, I plan on staying at least a couple of hours after to the birth. I will also do at least one postpartum visit to make sure everyone is still doing well and if I can be of any assistance.

If yes to the previous question; for how long & what do you feel are your strong points in this area?

In the first couple of hours after birth, if the mom has decided to breastfeed I will be there to support her and help her with holds, tips, or if she wants to try the laid back breastfeeding method as well. (Laid back breastfeeding method is where the mom lays back and lets the baby find it's own way to the nipple. The babies basically find their own “holds” they are comfortable with and there is less struggling.)

Fees & Payment Plans

What is your typical fee schedule for attending births?

I am currently not charging for my services, because I am not yet certified. (But if I have to use daycare I would appreciate some help with that cost)

Do you require a down payment?

Not yet.

Are you willing to be on a call list for "free" services when low income families contact our website?

Yes

How much do you charge for postpartum doula care?

Not charging yet

Do you send a detailed bill to your couples & when is their payment due?

I will, when I start charging

Do you charge additional mileage when you have to travel outside of your hometown?

I might...I haven't decided yet.

Do you charge "cost" for labor supplies used during a birth?

No

Will you provide a sliding fee for lower income couples?

Yes

Are you open to trading or bartering for services

Yes

Miscellaneous Information

How many times do you typically meet with couples prior to attending their birth?

I would like to meet with them at least 2 times.

Do you provide a "whole house labor rehearsal" for your couples?

This is something I am currently learning. But I will definitely go over and rehearse all kinds of techniques and positions  for labor and birth.

Do you guarantee backup services in case you are unable to attend due to illness or sudden conflicts?

If not, would you encourage your couple to find a 2nd choice doula for backup?

Yes, I have worked with and know doulas that I trust to do backup for me

If it felt "right" to you & your client, would you ever consider working as a team with another beginning doula to help her gain experience?

Yes, I think it is very important for all doulas (especially the ones just starting out) to be involved in as many birth experiences as they can. We can only get better with more knowledge and more experience.

Is it ok for other doulas to contact you to help secure their own reliable backup?

Yes, as long as my schedule allows I would be happy to help!

How do you honestly feel about attending a birth for a couple you have never met either as a last minute doula or backup doula?

Considering this is all that I have done so far....I make it work!

How do you describe yourself religiously?

I am a Christian who believes in that God has created our bodies for making, birthing, and nurturing babies! (In a very perfect way!)

How does your religion effect how you work with clients?

If the client is of a different religious background than I am that is not a problem. I am very open to and love learning about people from all religions, races, and backgrounds. I find it interesting and embrace  difference.

Do you provide a doula contract for detailed expectations of your care to be signed by all parties?

I am in the process of making one.

Have you ever worked with same sex couples?

No, but I am definitely open and willing to do so.

Final Words From Julia
My doula journey starts out like this. When I was pregnant with my daughter I was scarred to death of what birth was going to be like. I had only heard the very worst stories about childbirth. I had said to my first husband, childbirth educator, and OB/GYN...I want an epidural as soon as I go into labor! I also told my OB well I know that you will have to give me an episiotomy so just don't tell me when you are going to do it. (I cringe at that now). Well, I went into labor and I kept thinking to myself...when is the bad stuff going to happen? I got all the way to 7 cm and then thought I better get that epidural because I need to get rest and it obviously going to get worse. Nobody was there to tell me well you are pretty much to the point where it doesn't get any worse. Nobody was there to make suggestions as to different positions, different coping techniques. So I let them give me an epidural...it stalled out my labor for a long time and yes I did get that episiotomy after 2 hours of pushing. I really didn't think much about this labor and everything that happened and everything that didn't happen until I got pregnant with my 2nd child. My second husband and I watched a video called “The Business of Being Born”. I had already decided that I wanted a natural childbirth and this video talked a lot about midwives. I also had felt that with my first child  people told me how and where I should give birth to my baby.  So we decided to  switch to a midwife and have a water birth. We did and it was beautiful. I felt everything! I used to be scarred of feeling everything now I am so glad I did. I want to support as many women as possible to make their birth “their birth” to really own it. I want to give them all of the information I have, then they can make those informed decisions about what is going on with their body and their birth by themselves.
